Mount Kilimanjaro Trek

Trek Overview
–8 days

Day 0

Arrival - 5 pm- We will hold our first meeting and go over the entire itinerary, answer questions, etc.  

 

Day 1 

 We will go through all personal gear for each person, figure out rental gear make last-minute purchases, pack, and be ready to head out tomorrow morning at 7 am.      

 

Day 2 

 After breakfast, we will drive to the park entrance.  The next two hours will be spent taking care of registration, logistics, etc. before heading to the starting point.  We will hike through the rainforest up to Mti Mkubwa Camp 2760m, a 3-4 hrs hike

 

Day 3

Trek along the Shira ridge, up and down crossing rivers up to Shira Camp 3400m, we have moved from rainforest to moorland, a 5-6 hrs hike, 

 

Day 4

A short day trekking continues to Shira hut campsites, hiking to the open moorland, to camp 3850m, hot lunch at the camp, rest, afternoon short hike to gain acclimatization, 3 hrs hike

 

Day 5

A long day to Barranco campsites, trekking will ascend to 4600m Lava tower where you stop for picnic lunch, before descending to Barranco. It is from moorland to alpine desert to moorland at Barranco.  Climbing higher than you will sleep helps with acclimatization, trekking will cover 6-7 hrs, from Shira to Barranco camp 3990m

 

Day 6

 Continue to Karanga Valley, cross Barranco wall, and continue to gain altitude as we ascend through river valleys, Karanga you will get a hot lunch and see Moshi town lights during the night, 3 hrs hike, 4600m

 

Day 7

Continue hike to Barafu Hut 4600m, it is a short hike, 3 hrs hike. From  Barafu Hut we can see the second-highest peak, Mawenzi. Early dinner, long rest, and sleep, to prepare for a long summit day.  

 

Day 8 

At 10:30 pm we begin our preparations for the summit push. We will have snacks and hot drinks and depart before midnight.  From the start, the trail is steep until you reach Stella Point hopefully by sunrise. After hot drinks and another hour of hiking, you reach Uhuru Peak, 6-7 hrs trekking, 5895m 

 

It will take 3 hrs to descend to Barafu camp for lunch, short rest, and continue to descend for another 3 hrs to Mweka camp for dinner and camp.

 

Day 9

 After breakfast hike continue down to Mweka gate where you will be picked up and drive to Moshi for overnight, 3 hrs hiking down to Mweka and 2 hrs drive to town,

Here will be the end of the mountain trip.

Clothing  

Upper body

  Each layer from bottom to top should fit comfortably over the other until you are wearing all layers. 

1 - Waterproof breathable rain jacket with hood

1 - Insulated Parka, synthetic or (700-850) fill Down

1 - Softshell - fleece jacket - down sweater

1 - Long Sleeve Shirt, mid-weight synthetic

1 - Long Sleeve shirt, light-weight synthetic 

1 - Short Sleeve Shirt, light-weight, moisture-wicking fabric

1-2 - Sports Bra (women)


 

Lower body

 Each layer from bottom to top should fit comfortably over the other until you are wearing all layers.

1 - Waterproof breathable rain pants/nylon fitness pants w/o lining (side-zipper recommended)

1 - Hiking Pants 

1 - Fleece/expedition weight pants (recommended for in-camp & possibly summit day) 

1 - Long Underwear midweight synthetic

1 - Long underwear light-weight synthetic

3 - Underwear, briefs 


 

Headwear

1 - Brimmed Hat, for sun protection

1 - Knit Hat, for warmth

1 - Balaclava or Buff/neck gaiter for face coverage (recommended)

1  - Bandanas (2 -3 for women)  

1 -  Sunglasses (prescription if you need them)


 

Handwear

1 - Over-mitts, mittens or thick warm gloves (recommended for summit day)

1 - Gloves, mid-weight (windproof recommended)

1 - Glove lightweight 


 

Footwear  

1 - Hiking Boots, warm, waterproof, broken-in

Something similar 

1 - Lightweight camp shoe (recommended)

3-4 - Socks, wool or synthetic

1 - Sock liners, thin, synthetic, worn under socks to prevent blisters (recommended)

 

Accessories

1 - Goggles (recommended)

1 - Umbrella (Small compact Rainy season only)

 

Hydration - (total capacity 2.5 liters minimum)

1 - Water Bottle (Nalgene, 32 oz.)

1 - Water Bottle (Nalgene 16 oz. recommended) 

1 - Water Bladder ( 2-3 liters) 

1- 1L Thermos (Optional for hot drinks)

PLEASE - Be Safe and carry your personal PPE.  Do not expect to get them in- country.

1 -Pee Bottle, to avoid leaving tent at night (wide mouth Nalgene works well)

Stuff Sacks, Dry Bags or ziploc Bags of various sizes, to keep gear dry and separate
